Conflict is a part of life. Whether in families, friendships, or workplaces, disagreements are inevitable. But as followers of Christ, how we handle conflict matters. Do we react in anger, or do we seek peace?
📖 Romans 12:18 (KJV)
“If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”
One of the best biblical examples of handling conflict wisely is Abraham and Lot. Their story teaches us how to resolve disputes with humility, wisdom, and faith.
Abraham and Lot: Choosing Peace Over Strife
As Abraham and Lot’s families grew, so did their possessions, leading to a conflict between their herdsmen. The land wasn’t enough to sustain both groups, and tension began to rise.
📖 Genesis 13:7 (KJV)
“And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle.”
Abraham, as the elder and the one whom God had called, had every right to demand the best land. But instead of fighting, he chose peace.
📖 Genesis 13:8-9 (KJV)
“Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee… for we be brethren. Is not the whole land before thee? Separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right.”
✔ Abraham prioritized peace over personal gain.
✔ He let Lot choose first, showing humility and trust in God’s provision.
Lot, on the other hand, chose selfishly—he picked the most fertile land near Sodom, a place of wickedness. His decision later led to disaster.
Lessons on Handling Conflict
1. Approach Conflict with Humility
Abraham didn’t demand his rights. He could have insisted on the best land, but he valued relationships over possessions.
📖 Philippians 2:3 (KJV)
“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.”
✔ In conflicts, be willing to let go of pride.
✔ Ask yourself: Is the relationship more important than being right?
2. Seek Peace, Not Revenge
Instead of escalating the dispute, Abraham sought a peaceful solution.
📖 Matthew 5:9 (KJV)
“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”
✔ Don’t let small conflicts turn into major divisions.
✔ A wise person knows when to step back for the sake of peace.
3. Trust God with the Outcome
By giving Lot the first choice, Abraham showed his faith in God’s provision. He knew that God would take care of him, regardless of the land he received.
📖 Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
✔ When we handle conflict God’s way, we can trust Him with the results.
✔ Even if it feels like we are losing, God sees and blesses those who choose peace.
Resolving Conflict the Godly Way
Abraham’s story reminds us that conflict doesn’t have to lead to division or bitterness. With humility, wisdom, and faith, we can navigate disagreements in a way that honors God.
📖 Colossians 3:13 (KJV)
“Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another… even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”
✔ Choose humility over pride.
✔ Seek peace over winning.
✔ Trust God over controlling the outcome.
Next time you face a conflict, ask yourself: Am I handling this with wisdom like Abraham or selfishly like Lot? The choice is yours. 🙏✨
