Greater Works Through Prayer and Faith

In Gospel of John 14:12–14, Jesus speaks words that both inspire and challenge every believer:

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”
(NKJV)

These verses were spoken during a tender moment before Jesus’ crucifixion. He was preparing His disciples for life without His physical presence. Yet instead of discouragement, He gave them a powerful promise: their faith and prayers would continue His work on earth.

“Greater Works Than These”

Jesus had performed miracles—healing the sick, raising the dead, calming storms. How could believers possibly do greater works?

The “greater works” do not mean more spectacular miracles, but greater reach. After Jesus returned to the Father, the gospel spread across nations through His followers. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, countless lives were transformed.

This shows that God’s work continues through ordinary believers who trust Him.

The Power of Asking in Jesus’ Name

Jesus repeats a promise twice: “whatever you ask in My name, I will do it.”

Praying in Jesus’ name means:

  • Praying according to His will
  • Seeking God’s glory, not personal gain
  • Trusting His authority and power

Prayer becomes effective when it aligns with God’s purpose.

Prayer That Glorifies the Father

Jesus explains the reason for answered prayer:
“that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”

God answers prayers that point people back to Him. When prayers are centered on His glory, they become powerful instruments for His work.

Lives That Reflected This Promise

Peter the Apostle – Healing Through Faith

After Jesus ascended, Peter healed the lame man at the temple gate (Acts 3). This miracle was done in the name of Jesus and brought many to faith.

Paul the Apostle – Spreading the Gospel to Nations

Paul’s ministry reached far beyond what the disciples first imagined. Through prayer, faith, and obedience, he carried the message of Christ across regions.

The Early Church – United in Prayer

The early believers prayed together constantly. Their prayers led to boldness, miracles, and rapid growth of the church.

Living This Promise Today

John 14:12–14 reminds us that we are not powerless followers. Through faith and prayer:

  • We participate in God’s work
  • We witness lives being changed
  • We bring glory to God

God still works through those who believe and pray in Jesus’ name.

Final Reflection

Jesus’ promise is not just for the disciples—it is for every believer today.

When we believe in Him and pray according to His will, God works through us in ways greater than we can imagine.

The invitation is simple:

Believe. Pray. And let God work through you for His glory.
