Life is full of relationships—family, friends, spouses, mentors, and coworkers. These connections bring joy, love, and support, and they are truly blessings from the Lord. But as valuable as these relationships are, we must never forget one truth: our most important relationship is with God.
Jesus said it clearly: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment” (Matthew 22:37–38, KJV).
Every other relationship flows from this one. If our connection with God is strong, our love for others grows stronger. But if we put anyone—or anything—above Him, we will always find ourselves empty.
Why This Relationship Matters Most
- God Is the Source of Life. Every breath you take comes from Him (Acts 17:28). Without Him, nothing else holds together.
- God’s Love Is Unchanging. Human love can fail. People can leave. But “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” (Hebrews 13:8, KJV).
- God Directs Our Steps. While others may advise us, only God sees the whole picture of our lives. “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:6, KJV).
The Danger of Misplaced Priorities
Sometimes, we let people, careers, or even our own desires take the throne of our hearts. We make them more important than God. But the Bible warns us: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3, KJV).
When we place others above God, it doesn’t just weaken our walk with Him—it also puts unhealthy pressure on those relationships. No person was ever meant to fill the place only God can occupy.
How to Keep God First
- Start Your Day With Him. Pray, read His Word, and let Him set the tone for your heart.
- Seek His Will. Don’t just ask God to bless your plans—ask Him to reveal His plans.
- Love Others Through Him. When your heart is filled with God’s love, it naturally overflows to those around you.
- Guard Your Priorities. Check your heart regularly. Is anyone—or anything—taking the number one place in your life?
A Lasting Thought
Friend, relationships are precious, but our most important relationship is with God. He is the One who never leaves, never fails, and never changes.
Don’t allow anyone—no matter how dear—to become more important than Him. When God is first, every other relationship falls beautifully into place.
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33, KJV).
Choose Him first. Love Him most. Walk with Him daily. Because the best relationship you will ever have is the one you build with your Creator.
