In a world that glorifies self-expression and personal truth, it’s easy—even tempting—to believe that we are free to define right and wrong for ourselves. The culture says, “Follow your heart.” “Do what feels right to you.” “Live your truth.”
But Scripture teaches something very different—something far more life-giving and eternally secure:
“In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.”
—Judges 21:25 (KJV)
That verse isn’t a commendation. It’s a warning.
R.C. Sproul said it well:
“We are not free to do what is right in our own eyes. We are called to do what is right in His eyes.”
This is not a minor theological detail. It is the line between chaos and righteousness, between rebellion and surrender.
⚖️ The Danger of Self-Defined Morality
When we live by what is right in our own eyes, we become our own rulers—our own gods.
This is the sin that led to the fall of Adam and Eve. They didn’t murder. They didn’t steal.
They simply did what seemed right to them rather than trusting what God had commanded.
This pattern repeated throughout Israel’s history, and it repeats today.
The moment we elevate our opinion above God’s Word, we step out of His will and into deception.
👑 Called to Obedience
To be a Christian is not to just believe in God—it is to submit to His lordship.
We’re not just invited to follow Jesus. We’re commanded to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and obey Him.
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
—John 14:15 (KJV)
God’s commands are not burdens to weigh us down—they’re guardrails that keep us from destruction.
🔥 A Needed Wake-Up Call
It’s time to stop casually using phrases like, “God knows my heart” as an excuse for disobedience.
Yes, He does know your heart—and He knows when it’s straying from His truth.
God doesn’t call us to do what we think is good.
He calls us to know His Word, to submit to His will, and to do what is right in His eyes, even when it’s uncomfortable or unpopular.
🧭 The Word Is Our Compass
If we don’t look to God’s Word as our ultimate authority, we will drift with the tide of cultural opinions.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
—Psalm 119:105 (KJV)
Don’t follow your heart.
Don’t follow the crowd.
Follow Christ.
He is the truth. His way leads to life. Everything else leads to ruin.
🚨 A Call to Action
Let this be your resolve:
I will no longer live by what is right in my own eyes.
I will seek what is right in His eyes.
And I will live it—boldly, humbly, obediently.
This is not legalism. This is lordship.
This is not bondage. This is freedom—the kind of freedom that comes only from knowing that truth is not relative; it is revealed.
🔚 A Final Challenge
God doesn’t need your permission to be King.
But He invites your surrender.
You are not free to redefine righteousness.
You are free to walk in it—because Christ made the way.
Live not by your truth.
Live by His.
