In today’s world, we often hear phrases like “Follow your heart” or “Trust your feelings.” But is this truly wise? The Bible warns us that our hearts are not always trustworthy.
📖 Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV)
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
Our emotions can be unstable and misleading. They can push us toward choices that seem right in the moment but lead to regret. So, when can we trust our heart? Let’s explore this through the story of Samson.
Samson: A Man Led by His Heart
Samson was chosen by God to be a mighty deliverer for Israel, but his downfall came from trusting his own heart rather than God’s wisdom.
📖 Judges 16:1 (KJV)
“Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her.”
✔ Samson followed his desires rather than God’s guidance.
✔ His heart led him into relationships that weakened his strength and spiritual focus.
The most famous example was Delilah. Despite knowing she was working against him, Samson let his emotions override his wisdom, leading to his downfall.
📖 Judges 16:17 (KJV)
“That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head…”
✔ He let his emotions dictate his decisions.
✔ His misplaced trust led to his capture and suffering.
When Can We Trust Our Heart?
While our hearts can be deceptive, they are not entirely hopeless. When aligned with God’s truth, our desires can lead us toward His will.
1. When It’s Submitted to God
📖 Psalm 37:4 (KJV)
“Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”
✔ A heart surrendered to God will desire what He desires.
✔ Instead of chasing feelings, seek God’s direction first.
2. When It’s Guided by the Holy Spirit
📖 Ezekiel 36:26 (KJV)
“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you.”
✔ God transforms our hearts when we walk closely with Him.
✔ Instead of trusting emotions alone, trust the Holy Spirit’s leading.
3. When It Aligns with Scripture
📖 Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword… and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
✔ Test your desires against God’s Word.
✔ If it contradicts Scripture, it’s not from God.
Guard Your Heart, Trust in God
Samson’s story reminds us that following our emotions blindly can lead to destruction. Instead of trusting our hearts by default, we must surrender them to God and let Him shape our desires.
📖 Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
✔ Don’t follow your heart—lead it toward God.
✔ Seek wisdom, pray, and let God shape your desires.
The heart can deceive, but when surrendered to God, it becomes a powerful instrument for His will. Will you let Him lead yours today? ❤️🙏
