5 Things to Leave Behind for Spiritual Growth

Getting closer, to God isn’t always about acquiring things in your life; sometimes it involves releasing what hinders your progress. Here are a few aspects the Bible suggests we may need to let go of for growth;

1. Worry and Fear;

It’s common to be consumed by worries and worst case scenarios. However the Bible advises us “Do not be anxious about anything. In every situation by prayer and petition with thanksgiving present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4;6) Trusting in Gods care is essential as He looks after us.

2. Resentment and Grudges;

Clutching onto anger and bitterness is akin, to carrying a load. Jesus taught, “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors” (Matthew 6;12). Releasing grudges enables us to embrace the freedom and peace that forgiveness brings.

3. Envy and Comparison;

Measuring ourselves against others can breed feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction. The Bible prompts us that “Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, ” (Galatians 6;4). It’s important to focus on our personal growth journey as it plays a role, in achieving maturity.

4. Worshiping Idols;

Idolatry goes beyond statues; it encompasses placing anything above God whether its wealth, authority or even our own wishes. This aligns, with the sentiment expressed in Exodus 20;3 “You shall have no other gods before me.

5. Living for the World:

The world frequently pulls us in multiple directions, enticing us with immediate fulfillment and temporary pleasure. But Jesus taught, “Do not love the world or the things that belong to the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him”. (1 John 2:15).

Letting up of these things is difficult, but it is a crucial step toward a closer connection with God. Remember that the goal is to develop in our reliance on God and His grace rather than to become flawless.
