The Bible tells many powerful stories about Jesus, and one that stands out for its display of love and power is the story of Lazarus of Bethany. Lazarus wasn’t just someone Jesus met in passing; he was a close friend, along with his sisters Mary and Martha.
Friendship and Tragedy Strike
The story unfolds in the Gospel of John (John 11:1-45). When Lazarus falls ill, Mary and Martha send word to Jesus, hoping for his healing touch. Sadly, by the time Jesus arrives, Lazarus has already died and been buried for four days.
Grief and a Glimpse of Hope
Imagine the despair Mary and Martha must have felt! Their brother was gone, and their friend Jesus seemed far away. Yet, Jesus arrives, shares their grief, and utters words that spark a flicker of hope: “Your brother will rise again” (John 11:23).
A Miracle Witnessed
Jesus then instructs them to remove the stone from the tomb. Many watching likely thought this was madness. But Jesus, with a powerful voice, calls out to Lazarus, and to everyone’s astonishment, Lazarus walks out of the tomb alive! (John 11:43-44)
