A Devotional Reflection on Matthew 17:14–20 (NKJV)
In Gospel of Matthew 17:14–20, we witness a powerful moment that reveals both human weakness and the limitless power of faith in God.
A desperate father brings his demon-possessed son to Jesus’ disciples, but they are unable to heal him. When Jesus arrives, He rebukes the demon, heals the boy instantly, and then explains to His disciples why they failed.

“Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20)
This passage teaches a profound lesson: it is not the size of our faith that matters, but the presence of genuine trust in God.
When Effort Is Not Enough
The disciples had previously cast out demons and performed miracles. Yet here, they could not help the boy. Their experience and past success were not enough.
This reminds us that Christian life is not powered by:
- Past victories
- Personal ability
- Spiritual routine
It is powered by continual dependence on God.
Jesus’ Response to Unbelief
Jesus says plainly, “because of your unbelief.”
Unbelief is not always loud or obvious. Sometimes it hides behind:
- Doubt during trials
- Fear when facing problems
- Self-reliance instead of prayer
The disciples had authority, but at that moment, they lacked active faith.
Faith Like a Mustard Seed
A mustard seed is tiny, yet Jesus uses it as a picture of effective faith.
This means:
- Faith does not have to be impressive
- Faith must be genuine
- Faith must be placed in the right Person—God
Even small faith, when anchored in God, can accomplish what seems impossible.
Mountains in Our Lives
The “mountain” Jesus refers to may represent the obstacles we face:
- Family struggles
- Financial difficulties
- Health problems
- Emotional burdens
- Spiritual battles
These mountains feel immovable. But Jesus assures us that faith in God can move what we cannot.
Lives That Demonstrated Mountain-Moving Faith
Abraham – Trusting God’s Promise
Abraham believed God’s promise of a son despite old age and impossibility. His faith moved the “mountain” of doubt and delay.
David – Facing Giants with Confidence in God
David stood before Goliath not with fear, but with faith in the Lord. What seemed impossible to others became a testimony of God’s power.
The Canaanite Woman – Persistent and Humble Faith
She approached Jesus with humility and persistence for her daughter’s healing. Her small but determined faith was honoured by Christ.
Growing Faith Through Prayer
In the parallel account of this story, Jesus mentions prayer and fasting. Faith grows when we stay connected to God.
Faith is strengthened when we:
- Pray consistently
- Trust God daily
- Depend on Him rather than ourselves
This gospel teaches us that faith is not about spiritual performance. It is about trust.
Even faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains when placed in the hands of an all-powerful God.
The question for us today is simple:
Are we relying on our ability, or are we placing our trust fully in God?
