What Jochebed Teaches Us About Trusting God With What You Cannot Control

Some moments ask us to trust God in ways we never would have chosen. It is one thing to pray for courage when life feels manageable. It is another thing to release what is most precious to us because holding on is no longer possible.

Jochebed, the mother of Moses, lived in one of those moments. Pharaoh had ordered Hebrew baby boys to be killed, and every day she hid her son was an act of courage. But eventually the day came when she could hide him no longer. So she prepared a basket, placed her child inside it, and set him among the reeds along the Nile.

Jochebed did not know the full story God was writing. She did not know that the child she placed in the river would one day be used to lead Israel out of slavery. All she had was a dangerous situation, a mother’s love, and a decision to trust God with what she could no longer control.

Three Things Jochebed Teaches Us About Trusting God With What You Cannot Control

1. Faith does what it can, then trusts God with what it cannot do.

Jochebed did not sit still in fear. She hid Moses as long as she could. When hiding him was no longer possible, she made a basket and carefully prepared it to float. Her faith was not careless. It was active, thoughtful, and courageous.

There are times when trusting God means taking wise steps with what is in your hands. Pray. Prepare. Ask for counsel. Make the phone call. Do the next faithful thing. Faith is not pretending that danger is not real; it is obeying God while danger is real.

2. Surrender is not the same as giving up.

When Jochebed placed Moses in the basket, she was not abandoning him. She was entrusting him to the God who could guard him beyond the limits of her reach. Surrender can feel like loss because it asks us to open our hands. But in God’s presence, surrender is often the beginning of a deeper kind of trust.

You may be facing something you cannot fix, force, or fully protect. A child. A relationship. A diagnosis. A future you cannot see. Jochebed reminds us that when our hands reach their limit, God’s hands do not.

3. God can work through hidden obedience.

Jochebed’s act was quiet. It was not done on a battlefield or before a crowd. It happened near the water, in fear and hope, with no guarantee of what would happen next. Yet God used that hidden obedience as part of His deliverance story.

Much of faithfulness happens where few people see it. The prayer whispered at night. The decision to forgive. The choice to keep serving. The act of love that costs you something. God sees those hidden places, and He is able to weave them into purposes bigger than you can imagine.

A Life Lesson From Jochebed

Jochebed teaches us that trust is not proven only when we feel strong. Sometimes trust is proven when we feel helpless and still choose to place what we love into God’s care.

The basket on the Nile looked fragile, but the God watching over it was not. What feels fragile in your life today may still be held by a faithful Father. You may not be able to control the outcome, but you can entrust the outcome to Him.

When you can hide it no longer, carry it honestly to God. Prepare the basket. Release it with prayer. Trust that the Lord is present in the river, in the waiting, and in the story still unfolding.
