Scripture Focus: Lamentations 3:22–23 (ESV)
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
Each new morning brings with it the chance to begin again. As the sun rises, it shines on a world full of brokenness and beauty, weariness and wonder. Life isn’t always easy. We face challenges that test our strength and situations that feel beyond our control. Some days we wake up discouraged carrying regret, fear, or exhaustion from the day before. Yet right in the middle of our mess, God whispers this truth through Scripture: His mercies are new every morning.
This verse from Lamentations comes during one of the darkest times in Israel’s history. The prophet Jeremiah had witnessed the destruction of Jerusalem. His heart was crushed with grief, and the book is filled with laments over suffering and loss. But in the middle of his sorrow, Jeremiah pauses to reflect on something greater than his pain the faithfulness of God.
1. Mercy That Renews Daily
We often think of mercy as something we receive once in a while maybe when we’ve really messed up. But Lamentations 3:22–23 shows us something richer. God’s mercy isn’t given sparingly. It’s not limited by our failures or dependent on our performance. It’s daily. Fresh. Unending.
This means we don’t have to carry the weight of yesterday into today. God offers us a reset button each morning—not because we deserve it, but because He loves us that much. Every sunrise is a reminder that grace has not run out. His mercy meets us in the mundane, the messy, and the moments when we feel least deserving of it.
2. Faithfulness in Every Season
“Great is your faithfulness.” This is not just a beautiful lyric from a hymn; it is a powerful truth about God’s nature. Even when everything around us feels uncertain or unstable, we can trust that God remains the same.
He is faithful when we are afraid.
He is faithful when we feel alone.
He is faithful when we fall short.
His promises do not expire. His love does not waver. And His plans for us are not derailed by our mistakes. Knowing this allows us to rest not just physically, but spiritually and emotionally. We can stop striving and start trusting.
3. How Do We Rest in God’s Faithfulness?
Resting in God’s faithfulness is more than just reading a comforting verse. It’s a posture of the heart. It means learning to pause, breathe, and remember that we are not in control but God is, and He is good.
Here are three practical ways to live this out:
- Start your morning in prayer. Before the noise of the world rushes in, take a few moments to thank God for His mercy and ask Him for strength to walk through the day.
- Release yesterday. Whether it was a day of failure, fear, or fatigue, give it to God. His mercy covers even the things we cannot fix.
- Remind yourself of His truth. Write down verses about God’s faithfulness. Speak them over yourself. Let them anchor your heart when life feels shaky.
No matter where you find yourself today on a mountaintop or in a valley know this: God’s love for you has not changed. His mercy didn’t run out yesterday. It won’t run out tomorrow. It is new right now, in this very moment.
So take heart. Lift your eyes. And rest in the faithful, unfailing, always-renewing love of the Lord.
Great is His faithfulness.
