What Happens When You Take Your Eyes Off Jesus

Have you ever wondered what happens when you take your eyes off Jesus? Life often feels the heaviest when your focus shifts from Christ to the chaos around you. That’s exactly what happened to Peter on the Sea of Galilee. As long as his eyes were fixed on Jesus, he did the impossible—he walked on water. But the moment he looked at the wind and the waves, he began to sink.

This story teaches us a powerful truth: the waves don’t drown you—losing sight of Jesus does.

Peter’s Walk on the Water: A Lesson in Focus

In Matthew 14:29–30, we read:

“And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.”

Think about this—Peter actually walked on water. That’s not a metaphor, that’s a miracle. But the miracle ended the moment fear stole his focus. As soon as Peter took his eyes off Jesus, he began to sink.

It wasn’t the storm that defeated him—it was distraction.

The Storms of Life Don’t Have to Sink You

Like Peter, we face waves too. The waves of bills piling up. The waves of broken relationships. The waves of anxiety, doubt, and fear. And here’s the truth: It’s not the waves that drown us–it’s what happens when we take our eyes off Jesus.

When you focus on your problems, they grow larger. But when you focus on Christ, He grows larger in your sight, and your problems shrink in comparison.

Keeping Your Eyes on Jesus in Life’s Storms

So, how do we keep our focus when life feels overwhelming?

  1. Pray before you panic. Fear screams, but prayer silences fear. Call on Jesus like Peter did—“Lord, save me!”—and watch His hand lift you up.
  2. Fill your mind with His Word. Scripture is your anchor in the storm. When doubt whispers, let God’s promises speak louder.
  3. Worship in the waves. Praise reminds your heart that God is greater than the storm around you.
  4. Walk by faith, not by sight. The waves are temporary. Jesus is eternal. Trust His presence even when you can’t trace His plan.

Don’t Let Fear Distract You from Faith

What happens when you take your eyes off Jesus? You begin to sink into fear, doubt, and despair. But when you fix your gaze on Him, you rise above the waves.

Remember this: Peter walked on water until he looked away from Christ. The same is true for us—if we keep our eyes on Jesus, nothing can sink us.

Fixing Your Focus on Jesus

Friend, remember this: what happens when you take your eyes off Jesus is that fear and doubt creep in, and you begin to sink. But when your gaze stays on Him, no storm can pull you under. Keep your eyes on Jesus, not the waves.

Because the truth is simple but life-changing: the storm doesn’t sink you—losing sight of Jesus does. Stay focused on Him, and you’ll find the strength to walk on waters you never thought possible.
