When we think about discipleship, it’s easy to associate it with gaining knowledge—learning scripture, understanding theology, and studying the life of Jesus. While knowledge is valuable, it is not the ultimate goal of discipleship. Jesus did not call His followers to simply know about Him; He called them to obey Him.
Knowing vs. Obeying
There is a significant difference between knowing about Jesus and following Him in faithful obedience. The Pharisees in Jesus’ time had extensive knowledge of the Scriptures, yet many of them failed to recognize and obey the very Messiah they studied. Jesus Himself said, “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46, KJV). Knowledge without obedience is incomplete discipleship.
Jesus’ Call to Follow
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus repeatedly called people to follow Him, not just to listen to His teachings. When He called Peter, James, and John, they didn’t just sit and listen—they left everything and followed Him (Matthew 4:19-20). True discipleship demands action, surrender, and transformation.
Obedience as Love
Jesus equates love with obedience: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15, KJV). Our love for Christ is proven not by how much we know but by how we live in obedience to His Word. Faithful obedience is an act of love, trust, and devotion.
Practical Steps to Faithful Obedience
- Apply What You Learn – Don’t just study the Bible; let it shape your actions and decisions.
- Live by Faith – Obedience often requires stepping out in faith, even when we don’t fully understand God’s plan.
- Serve Others – Jesus modeled servanthood, and true disciples follow His example in serving others selflessly.
- Stay Accountable – Surround yourself with fellow believers who encourage and challenge you to walk in obedience.
- Daily Surrender – Make obedience a daily decision, trusting God’s will over your own.
The Ultimate Goal
Discipleship is not about accumulating spiritual knowledge—it’s about being transformed into the likeness of Christ through faithful obedience. As James 1:22 reminds us, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” (KJV).
May we not only know Christ but also follow Him with unwavering obedience, living lives that reflect His love and truth.
